My wife bought and used virtually every Family Tree Maker edition for many years up until the time she passed away in 2004. Before FTM she used PAF. I used earlier versions of FTM a few times, but I never even approached the level she did. A few days ago I installed Family Tree Maker 2012 Premium after I finally located the backup disks from over eight years ago. The 2012 FTM software loaded the old database and converted it flawlessly.

There is a feature option in this version that is new to me. After installation, you are asked if you want to enter the PC version or the Television version without any explanation of what each offers. I chose the TV mode and right away I didn’t like the menu structure. For some very weird reason, the title bar at the bottom is very wide and actually covers up a big portion of the movie menu such as subtitles.

I bought TaxCut because at the time TurboTax had a stupid policy of charging an extra $10 for each printed tax return. They later reversed this, but I had already started preparing a year-end planning pro forma return using TaxCut. Now that I’ve used the product, it would have been better to stick with TurboTax even if I had to pay extra to print a planning return. (And of course, now TurboTax has dropped that stupid charge, so it’s no longer a problem.

Pro: The product is pretty good although you still need to know what you are doing in any kind of complex situation. I’ve tried other tax prep products and this is the best, albeit imperfect.nI give it 3 stars because of the huge cost to do state e-file. This is really deceptive price advertising – they say it comes Federal + State, but if you actually want to FILE your taxes then it’s another $25.

It has most of the functionality that the standard Windows based office package. I’m on a Power PC IBM 1,8 ghz processor It can be a little slow starting up. The menu options are the same as you would find in the Windows based version. I have had this software for some time now and the product updates have cured some issues but cutting and pasting in word has been a little bit of an issue in that if you use the return key to separate your paragraphs when you past into another document it removes the spaces.

The install went well. I preformed a fresh install. The machine I use is strictly for testing, I did not install this on a PC that I use daily. I installed it on a laptop that’s 1.67 ghz processor over clocked to 2 ghz it has 512 shared ram (Microsoft recomends 1 gig)other then that the laptop met all of the other suggested minimum requirements. It has the Intel 945 chipset that comes with integrated graphics Intel accelerator 950 video card.
