This is my first modification on any type of computer. In fact, I did it incorrectly, and it still worked. What I mean is, you are supposed to download the driver (CDROM or online) and then install the card. Windows XP recognized it immediately and it works as advertised at 480 Mbits/sec. If you must know just one important thing about USB 2.0, remember not to unplug the peripheral device when the PC is on.

I like it because I’m familiar with this software, via their Edit Pro MX. This 2016 version has some improvements over the older versions, and a bug fixed on the title function (I can move the title bar anywhere, and the video bars stay where you leave them). It’s easy to overlap, fade in & out, black out, reduce volume or remove it; sharpen and brighten. I don’t like the fancy effects; just good, solid editing is what I need.

I had not been a previous Pinnacle user. But I have used Corel and Cyberlink. That said, there is quite a learning curve for Pinnacle. As a result I made liberal use of the free 30 day access to Pinnacle’s Studio Backlot training. And I am glad I did. To begin to appreciate Studio 19 from a novice perspective, I found the training to be essential. I downloaded the training files and followed along with the video tutorials and before I knew it I was producing videos.

As a background, I have a desktop running XP with all of the latest updates. The system requirements far exceed what is listed for Media Expressions. The installation and updates were uneventful. My first project with the new software was to capture, or rather attempt to capture, video from a Sony digital 8mm camcorder and burn it to a DVD. Granted 8mm is an older technology, but I needed to get the video burned to a DVD since I don’t really use the camera anymore.

My previous version of PowerDVD was 12. Version 14 is a much cleaner interface. Navigation is a snap and playback of DVD, BD and MP4 is seamless. But there are two things that really bug me about 14 though. First, it gives strange thumb nail images to files. I have home video I called Halloween 2006. It placed the movie cover of the movie Halloween as the thumb nail for my home movie.

I have installed this software on a new high end desktop PC I built myself and am pleased with the performance and stability. The photo editing software is very intuitive to use and even gives simple directions in a left side pane when you open a particular tool. Many functions act in a similar fashion to other photo editing software so, if you are used to Microsoft or any of the others, this should feel pretty natural.
