I’ve been using Photoshop for years including CS6 (last year’s version) and am proficient with it. I also use GIMP, Illustrator and Ink. What I like about Painter is that it is a nice middle ground between a program that adjusts pictures and a program that creates art.
It is easy to use for anyone who has used any of the Adobe or open source art programs. The icons are similar to well known ones and the functionality is similar. Some of my fellow reviewers have talked about the great brushes and techniques that Painter has and I agree: it has a ton of great tools. But I’m not ready to replace Creative Suite yet (or even GIMP).
Photoshop, Illustrator and GIMP, Ink all offer a ton more online support to add to brushes, textures, templates and even training than Corel has. And for me that is what gives them the edge. I was really impressed with this program and I wasn’t expecting it to be so robust. It definitely held its own. But for a Photoshop user I’m more comfortable sticking with what I know and what I can get easy support online for.
If you are looking for an art program this is a great - and comparatively cheap - program that has a ton of tools that will meet most people’s needs. If you are an Adobe user then you will feel comfortable using this program too.
