Review by Drew Mc
I’ve been using this for a few months now and it’s grown on me. At first I didn’t notice much difference but after going back and forth between the old and new iterations, I can certainly see the improved performance. For starters, Office 2008 does not run under Rosetta, the software that runs on Intel Macs that allows it to run some older PPC apps. This alone makes a noticeable difference in that Office is no longer as much of a processor hog.
Once thing that confuses me is WHY MS thought they needed to change the file format (.docx, xlsx, etc.) with this version (also occurred with the current windows version)? The good news is that you can still open, and SAVE in the older formats (.doc, .xls, etc.) should you need/desire to.
I’ve never been a big MS Office fan and I have also grown rather fond of the new iWork suite by Apple. That said, Office 2008 delivers on it’s promises, but it is still pretty much the same old office. Bottom line: If you liked the old office and are now running a newer Intel Mac, then you want to be running this version.
